How to Unlock your Vehicle
Modern electronic key fobs offer superior convenience and performance to manual keys. Batteries will eventually wear out and require replacement. If your Volvo key fob has started to malfunction intermittently, it's an indication that the battery is depleted and will need replacing soon.
Fortunately, there are some simple steps that you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. Find a clean area to work on. Set out all the tools you'll need. Locate the battery's hatch and ensure that it is set to "open." Make use of a flathead screwdriver or coin or other similar tool to turn the hatch wide. Next, carefully pry the battery out of its socket by lifting up on the side closest to the key-ring loop. Be sure to use rubber gloves to avoid damaging the contacts or the clips.
Place the new battery in the socket once the old one was removed. Make sure that the positive side is facing upwards and that it is securely seated within all clips. Slide the cover down toward the key-ring until it is loose and is able to slide off. Then, remove the cover to reveal the hidden mechanical key blade. It can be used to unlock your car through the driver's door If the battery for your key fob is dead or has been lost.
How to Start Your Vehicle
Modern vehicles come with keyfobs which do more than simply unlock and lock the doors. They can also perform other useful functions like summoning and auto-parking the vehicle. The brand new Volvo XC60 is capable of remotely starting your engine using its key fob buttons. How exactly does it work?
Find a clean surface on which you can set up the necessary items for this project. Lay the fob on the surface with the Volvo logo facing up. Use a flathead or coin, or similar tool to flip open the battery hatch. Avoid touching the electronic contact surfaces using your tools. This could cause the fob to stop functioning properly.
After the hatch has been opened, place the battery in its socket. Make sure the positive (+ side) is facing upwards. Once the clips have been secured, replace your battery cover, and reassemble your fob.
By pressing the unlock button once the alarm will disengaged and the door for the driver will be unlocked. Pressing it a second time will unlock all doors and the tailgate. The unlock button can also be beneficial for rolling down the windows to let in cool, fresh air on a hot summer day. If you're looking for more than that, the key fob could also be used to activate the ERS system, which will begin the vehicle's climate control system and warm or cool it to the desired temperature settings when the vehicle is parked.
How to Replace the Battery
If your key fob no more locks or unlocks your car it may be time to replace the battery. The battery can be replaced with a flathead screwdriver, pry bar made of plastic or other small tools. Find the small slot used to house the backup/emergency key fob made of metal. Inject the blade of a screwdriver or pry bar tool into the slot and gently open the back of the fob that holds the key. After the fob is open, locate the CR2032 3V battery and remove it. Place a new battery in its spot and join the fob.
Note: Certain older Volvo models have a different type of battery that is called the CR2025. CR2025 batteries are 7 tenths of a millimeter less than a CR2032 battery, so you'll need to be extra careful when placing the battery of your replacement.

How to unlock the Hidden Key Blade
Keyfobs for Volvo have evolved in recent years. They are more than just a remote to lock and start your vehicle. They can also open and close the windows and provide an energy boost when needed. To unlock the full potential of your key fob, first you will be required to understand how to use it.
Your key fob is equipped with a transponder that's been programmed to work with your Volvo. When you insert the key fob into the ignition barrel transponder chips read the code and compares it to the one stored in the start inhibitor module of your car. If the codes do not match, your car will not start. This is an important security measure to prevent your Volvo from being started if a wrong key is used.
You'll need to bring your lost key to a dealership to have it replaced. Your vehicle will also be reprogrammed. This process can take between 5 and 10 days and will cost you a significant amount of money. There is an option to cut down on some of this expense by programming the system at home. You can find the required details in your owner's manual or on the internet. Remove the logo and nonlogo covers and place your key fob on an uncluttered surface. Push the grey button in the upper right corner of your fob. This will open the cover to reveal the CR 2032 3V battery.
